As a child growing up in the South, I learned to utilize what I had and make it into something great. A pine cone in the yard went a long way in a game of catch. The simple things were not taken for granted until time started speeding by. As I grew older, I began to realize life was not so simple or easy anymore. Soon I would be graduating high school and solely choosing my career path and next big move in my life. The pressure unfolded leaving me stressed, but soon I turned towards God for guidance. I have always had a passion for cooking and since a young age was always in the kitchen helping my mother cook. I had taken several cooking classes in high school and one day a scout came into class from Johnson & Wales University. The guy was enthusiastic and motivating in a sense of passion for cooking. He gave me the wake up call I had been asking for. The only school I applied to was JWU in 2013, but the only one it turns out I needed to apply for. Next, I was accepted and knew from that point moving forward my life would forever change. I had to make a decision on which campus to move too and how on Earth was I going to make such a drastic change in my life so quickly. I had the strive and motivation to leave a small town and join the big city. The big city where job opportunities are around ever corner and success is much easier then in a rural town. North Miami would be my home for the next four years, with many opportunities unfolding that I would have never imagined would be possible. I packed my luggage and drove fifteen hours to a strange place crowded with people of all races and sexualities. At first, the change was difficult and homesickness was too often visiting me, but before I knew it I was in labs cooking away and making lifelong friends. My first year of college I joined the honors program and finished out with a 3.8 GPA. The summer following freshmen year I chose to quicken my graduation date by do my internship early, taking no break. I applied and was quickly interviewed by Disney's Recruiting Chef. That day I was guaranteed the internship position and would be moving to Orlando, FL for three months. The program was intense and emotionally draining. I was overworked and underpaid, but the experience and now spot on my resume was worth the dreadful three months. Since moving away from home and living in a big city, I have learned so many valuable life lessons that I am a much stronger, happier, and independent women. I now own my own apartment with another student I met at JWU last year. I manage a Dunkin Donuts and attend school full-time. My GPA is a 3.7 currently with only one more semester until I have my first degree an Associates in Culinary Arts. Stay tuned for more on my whats happening in my life!
